Surgical Education and Healthcare in African Low Resource Setting

Dr. Joe Starke is a general and oncologic surgeon who has worked at Winneshiek Medical Center since March 2020. He has spent a total of 12 years of his career working in hospitals in West Africa. His most recent visit was to Niger in 2019, where he worked to complete a nine-year development project creating a surgical training program at a large rural/regional hospital. Dr. Stark will share his experiences in surgical education and healthcare in low income African communities.

Dr. Starke earned his bachelor of science in Biology from the Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK and his medical degree from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Board of Surgery. In addition to providing general surgery expertise for a variety of issues like gallbladder disease, appendectomies and hernias, he has practiced as a general surgeon since 1992 in a variety of settings in Oklahoma and Missouri, specifically in surgical oncology (surgical care for patients with cancer) with empasis in cancer, breast, thyroid and gastrointestinal surgical care.
